Faldo Series Asia 2012 – Cambodia




13th September 2012, Siem Reap – 11 Malaysian junior golfers took up the challenge to participate in the prestigious Faldo Series Asia in Cambodia. The inaugural leg which was held at Angkor Golf Resort in Siem Reap, saw a strong field of 35 juniors coming from Thailand, Philippines, Korea, South Africa and Cambodia.
Faldo Series have had world renowned golfers participation namely current men’s World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and women’s World No. 1 Yani Tseng. Seeing the opportunity to make a name for themselves, the Malaysian juniors defied the odds and brought home 2 titles: the Under 12 Category & Girls Category while finishing runner-up to the Under 21 Category in a 2 day tournament.
11 year old Victor Ng Yu Kai from Kuala Lumpur decimated his opponents from the very beginning by scoring 81 from the adult red tee box on Day 1. Despite having a strong lead, Victor didn’t stop just there as he shot an impressive round of just 2 over the par 72 and made him the undisputed champion of the Under 12 category. His twin sister, Winnie Ng Yu Xuan shot 86 on Day 1 but finished fifth overall for the Under 21 Girls category when she fought back fiercely on Day 2 with a great score of 75.
Asha Lakshme took an early lead into the clubhouse as she scored 73 including an eagle at the Par 5. The lass from Johor put on a great show on final day when she displayed her championship skills to record a 1 under and took home the Girls Category right away. Asha secured a placing at the Grand Finals of the Faldo Series Asia held on March 2013 at the Faldo Course of Mission Hills Shenzhen. Celine Lim Shwu Ling helped Malaysia to have a 1-2 finish by shooting a 76-77 to take up 2ndplacing.
The Under 16 Boys Category had strong participation from brothersSim You Wei & Sim You Jin, Kew Jia Jiun,Elijah Jethro Chitty and 13 year old Suzairi Iqmahfrom Sabah who was 9 over on Round 1 but charged back with an astounding 73 on Round 2.
It was all serious business in the Under 21 as 18 year old Penangite Nick Ang Xia Ee shared lead on Day 1 by shooting a 2 under with Thai golfer Sitipong Wiangchanok while his countryman Thanadol Sangkoranee was creeping in second place with 72. The trio were trading birdies& pars on Day 2 from the beginning and until the very end. They finished both rounds with a tied score of 142 each and as a sudden playoff decision; a countback format was called upon. The back 9 scores which favoured Thanadol Sangkoranee propelled the 18 year old Thai to be the Under 21 champion and automatically set Nick Ang as runner up while Sitipong finished third.
The event concluded with a special clinic for the juniors hosted by Roger Hunt, adviser to the Cambodia Golf Federation and prize ceremony presented by Tom Phillips, CEO of Faldo Series Asia.
